Then become a Diploma employer champion...

What is the Diploma Champions Network?

To ensure that employers get a clear understanding of the Diploma benefits and opportunities, the Diploma Employers Champions’ Network (DECN) made up of national employers, public sector representatives and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has been set up to encourage and support further long-term employer involvement in Diplomas.

Current situation

The best person to persuade an employer to support the Diploma is another employer.

250 Diploma employer champions are now being recruited overall for the 17 Diploma lines to give full coverage across the nine English regions.

However, we need more Employer champions from the Environmental and Land-based industries to ensure that our industries are fully represented.

Employer benefits to getting involved:

  • Opportunity to shape the education of future generations and to meet the challenges of business

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of major new qualification

  • Demonstrate Corporate Social Responsibility

  • Gain improved knowledge for future hiring and training requirements.

The Champions role

What does a Diploma Employer Champion do?

The champion has a vital role to play in securing the success of the Diploma by:

  • Encouraging other employers to support Diplomas through personal presentations and media coverage (primarily, trade and regional)
  • Providing informal advice to consortia on how to best work with employers.

Becoming a champion

Initial commitment:

1/2 day induction attendance, supportive quote and photo for public use and press release announcing appointment.

On-going commitment:

Varies by individual capacity. Approx 1/2 day per month for media/speeches/other promotional activities (eg, business breakfasts, Education Business Partnership events) is common.

Attendance at annual conference.

Travel expenses can be claimed for all events.

Support for Champion

The Diploma Employer Champion Network has a unit dedicated to supporting Champions. This provides:

  • An induction to support new Champions to understand and gain knowledge of Diplomas and the Champion’s role
  • A pack of support materials including background briefings, a speech template, FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions).
  • A Champions’ website with an e-bulletin for regular updates.
  • The annual event with a government minister covering strategy and progress
  • Support for Champions to pass on feedback and employer expression of interest from events

Who can become a champion?

Champions should represent private, public and third-sector enterprises of all sizes and sectoral interests; and be passionate about the Diploma and the opportunities it presents for employers to get involved with schools and colleges.
