The vision for the Diploma in Environmental and Land-based Studies is to prepare students for employment and for higher or further education by developing a thorough understanding of how the sector works, including its environmental and economic importance. It has been structured to allow young people in England to study it alongside GCSEs and A Levels.

Designed in collaboration with employers, the Diploma in Environmental and Land-based Studies combines knowledge, understanding and skills that are informed by and recognisable to industry and the world of work.

Delivered through a range of applied learning techniques, it will give students a solid and broad general education, coupled with a grasp of which sector-related occupation, future training or learning they may wish to take up.  The Diploma will also help develop maturity in young people to make them more employable.

Available at Foundation, Higher and Advanced Levels, the Diploma in Environmental and Land-based Studies will be available in England from September 2009.  From 2013 there will be a national entitlement across England to the new Diplomas.  An Extended Diploma, allowing even more in-depth study, will become available from 2011.

  • Generic learning, including functional skills in English, maths and ICT, and personal learning and thinking skills.

  • Additional or specialist learning – an opportunity to study further environmental and land-based topics in more depth, or to broaden the range of study through complementary learning.

  • A project, which will allow individuals to plan and organise their own learning.  At Advanced level the project will demonstrate project management, synthesis and other higher cognitive skills that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) need.

  • Work experience as a key feature.

The Diploma, at each level, will enable progression into any sector through further education, vocational qualifications including apprenticeships and National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs).  At Advanced level, students can progress to higher education.
